Porcupine Fire Update
Livingston, MT... Despite the smoke in our area yesterday the Porcupine Fire was relatively inactive. The Porcupine Fire, located on the west side of the Crazy Mountains, received westerly winds blowing sparks further into the rocks, igniting isolated trees in the cliffs to the south and east. Today fresh crew members will begin replacing some of the 23 fire personnel currently on the fire. The helicopter water bucket drops have been making an impact in the extremely steep terrain and will continue to work the fire again today.
Park County as well as neighboring counties, continue to report smoky skies from large fires burning to the west and northwest. The Montana Department of Environmental Quality issues a daily forecast and discussion of potential smoke impacts throughout the state. This report can be accessed at http://www.deq.state.mt.us/FireUpdates/index.asp.
The Porcupine Fire began Sunday afternoon, July 29, 2007 on US Forest Service lands within the Livingston Ranger District. The fire is located in the Crazy Mountains north and east of Wilsall, MT between Black Mountain and Sunlight Peak.
The South Fork of Shields River Trail, #265 remains closed for public health and safety concerns.
Forest visitors to the Gallatin National Forest are reminded that all campfires are banned. Also keep in mind outside of the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness any industrial activities such as cutting firewood are only allowed between the hours of 1:00A.M. and 1:00P.M. with a 1 hour patrol following work. All driving off roads and trails is also prohibited.
For more information call the Livingston Ranger District at (406) 222-1892.
