ELK FIRE COMPLEX FINAL UPDATE

August 4, 2007

Total Complex Acreage: 17,684 acres Incident Resources: 582 personnel

Fire suppression efforts continue on the King Creek 2/Wingate/Titus Fires. Firefighting resources will monitor fire activity and are available for rapid response. Crews continue to secure and reinforce established firelines. Patrol and mop up of the Little Grider Fire is ongoing.

Fireline repair continues on sections of line where suppression activities are nearly completed. Fire personnel are actively working with the Karuk Tribe to stabilize sacred sites that may have been damaged by the fire. Repair work consists of: placing waterbars on firelines to divert winter rains and prevent erosion; removing suppression equipment from lines where it is no longer needed; felling of hazard trees and chipping brush to reduce the fuel load. Additional needs will be evaluated and implemented as necessary.

Residents are again reminded that smoke will continue to be seen, as pockets of unburned fuel continue to ignite in the interior of the burns. Air quality may continue to be poor in some areas due to smoke.

NorCal Team 1 will turn the fire over to the Klamath National Forest on Sunday August 5, 2007 at 6:00 AM. Operations will be overseen by a type III Incident Commander and forces will be reduced to approximately 100 personnel.
