FIREFIGHTERS MOPPING UP THE BACHELOR FIRE
DILLON, MONT., July 7, 2007, 5 p.m.-Firefighters are mopping up the Bachelor fire, a lightning-caused blaze 29 miles southwest of Dillon.
Volunteer firefighters and engines from Dillon and Grant, together with Forest Service and Montana Department of Natural Resources & Conservation (DNRC) firefighters and engines from Dillon have been able to stop the fire from spreading.
They were aided by rain and a retardant drop from an air tanker based in Missoula.
The firefighters now report that the fire is only smoldering as they work to mop it up.
The fire was estimated earlier in the afternoon at over 100 acres. The incident commander is now using a "GPS" or global-positioning system device to more accurately map the fire.
The fire is in Horse Prairie, two miles northwest of Bachelor Mountain. It burned sagebrush and grass on land administered by the Bureau of Land Management.
A helicopter ordered from Montana DNRC in Helena had to stop to fuel in Dillon on its way to the fire. The helicopter then was grounded for safety reasons when rain and heavy winds passed through the Dillon area.
When the weather clears, the helicopter will return to its base, as it's no longer needed for the Bachelor fire.
