National Guard Troops Staff Road Blocks
Incident: Fool Creek Wildland Fire Used for Resource Benefit
Released: 8/13/2007
National Guard troops have been staffing road closures in the North and South Forks of the Teton River since Wednesday, relieving Teton County Sheriff's deputies so they can resume more normal schedules and duties.
The Guard has received positive feedback, especially from folks at the retardant plant in the South Fork of the Teton, said Staff Sgt. James Bryan of the 623rd Engineers, based in Hamilton. The National Guard makes sure that motorists keep their distance when helicopters are flying in to dip retardant from tanks set up near the Ear Mountain Guard Station along the South Fork Teton River Road.
At the North Fork of the Teton, National Guard troops check firefighters into and out of the closed road leading to the Teton Pass Ski Area and the Massey Tract cabins in the West Fork of the Teton.
The food and accommodations at the 7 Lazy P Guest Ranch are excellent, Bryan said, as are the views in the area. Persons serving at both closures have seen bears, he said.
