Selected Fire Area Roads and Campgrounds to Reopen
Acting Forest Supervisor Marlene Finley has announced some important road openings within the Inyo Complex fire area. The Glacier Road, providing access to the campgrounds, cabins, and trailheads of Big Pine Canyon, as well as Glacier Lodge and Glacier Pack Trains, reopened at 10:00 am Tuesday morning. Onion Valley Road was also reopened to Upper and Lower Grays Meadow Campgrounds and Seven Pines recreation residence tract. The rest of the road up to Onion Valley may open as early as Tuesday evening.
The Baxter Pass and Oak Creek roads will remain closed until further notice due to fire activity in the area.
Wilderness permits are now being issued for the trailheads at Shepherd Pass and in Big Pine Canyon.
Motorists are urged to use caution on these and any other roads in or near the fire area as equipment and personnel are still working. Rocks and debris rolling down onto roadways can also be a problem and visitors are urged to use extreme caution when driving, bicycling, or hiking in the fire areas.
Weather predictions for this week, beginning today, include widespread thunderstorms and the potential for more dry lightning. The future re-opening of roads and facilities, and closures for public safety, are in part dependent upon what weather conditions actually materialize.
For additional information on the reopening of roads in the fire area please call the Inyo National Forest Fire Information Line at 760-873-2427or Fire Information Officer Jim Wilkins at 909-815-3967.
