Excellent progress was made on the Wheeler Fire yesterday. Today's focus is completing remaining fireline, reinforcing existing line and falling dangerous trees/snags.No new precipitation is expected in the near future and fuels remain extremely dry; the fire is actively burning and smoke will continue to be visible.
The 22,902 fire, is now 83 percent contained and planning for rehabilitation is underway. Due to success in containment efforts, firefighting resources are beginning to be released for reassignment;863 firefighters remain.
A small group of property owners from the east side of the fire were allowed to retrieve personal items from their homes early today.Fire officials and fire fighters are working quickly to allow as much access as possible without compromising safety of homeowners and permittees and the firefighter themselves. Extremely hazardous conditions exist in the entire fire area but especially along key access roads due to falling trees/snags. This hazard is especially apparent in the south/southeast portions of the fire. Barring unforseen events, fire officials expect to increase access within a day.
A tour of the fire camp on Genessee-Arlington Road east of Taylorville will be offered to the general public on Friday.Meet at the main camp entrance at 10 a.m. All ages are welcome.
The campgrounds at the Antelope Lake Recreation Area are closed until further notice.Reserve USA will contact people with an existing reservation and arrange a refund. Please allow time for the closure notification to be posted with ReserveUSA.Call Northwest Parks at (530) 283-5559 if a resolution has not been completed within a week. Other summer camping alternatives include Eagle Lake and Almanor Lake west of Susanville, Bucks Lake west of Quincy, Little Grass Valley near LaPorte, and Frenchman Lake east of Portola.
