Firefighters continued to make excellent progress today on the Wheeler Fire, which has burned an estimated 22,902 acres. The fire is now 83 percent contained and planning for rehabilitation is underway.
Firefighters continued to reinforce containment lines and mop up hot spots 100 feet in. AIthough thunderstorms were predicted again for Wednesday, only light rain occurred within the fire perimeter. Higher humidities and lower temperatures have moderated fire activity. No new precipitation is expected in the near future and fuels remain extremely dry.
Multiple small fires started yesterday throughout the Plumas National Forest as a result of lightning. Seven were within the Antelope Complex initial attack area, were staffed today, and are now contained. Due to success in containment efforts, firefighting resources are beginning to be released for reassignment from the Antelope Complex. 1,034 firefighters remain.
A small group of property owners from the east side of the fire will be escorted by law enforcement to their homes for a short visit to retrieve personal items on Thursday, July 12th. That group includes homeowners along the north end of the 28N01 road and south to the intersection of 27N04. Homeowners should meet at the checkpoint on the Janesville Grade road at 9 a.m. and bring identification and validation of ownership. Residents will need to leave the area by noon.
