Madison Arm Fire Continues Growing
Highway 191 is Re-Opened
West Yellowstone, MT... The Madison Arm Fire is now estimated at 900 acres. The fire, detected earlier this afternoon, is burning about 1.5 miles north of the town of West Yellowstone. The fire has quieted down somewhat this evening due to lower temperatures and higher relative humidity, and Highway 191 from West Yellowstone to the junction with Highway 238 has been re-opened.
Resources on scene include three heavy air-tankers, an air-attack, two helicopters, two lead planes, two bulldozer, four engines, and 15 smokejumpers. The Gallatin Forest has ordered a Type 2 Incident Management Team who may arrive on scene sometime tomorrow afternoon.
The Madison Arm Resort, Bakers Hole Summer Homes, and Lakeshore Summer Homes remain evacuated tonight (approximately 40 homes). People have been allowed back into the Bakers Hole Campground and the Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks Game Warden Cabin. The Yellowstone Holiday Sub-division and adjoining home owners have been placed under pre-evacuation notice. The West Yellowstone Airport and West Yellowstone Smokejumper Base are open and functioning.
The fire continues burning in sagebrush and timber and continues to increase in size. Crews will continue working the fire throughout the night. The cause of the fire is under investigation. "If traveling in this area please drive carefully since smoke could limit visibility," said Marna Daley, Gallatin National Forest Public Affairs Officer.
