East Slide Rock Ridge News Release 08/29/08

Incident: East Slide Rock Ridge Wildland Fire
Released: 8/29/2008

(Elko, NV) - Firefighters continued to build and strengthen containment lines on the East Slide Ridge Rock fire in anticipation of another predicted high wind event this weekend. The fire remains at 10% containment.

To secure the northern perimeter, several actions were taken yesterday. Firefighters conducted a burnout along the lower portion of the Pole Creek Road. The objective was to create a 300 foot buffer between Pole Creek Road and the fire.

On the west flank, along Sawmill Ridge, firefighters are concentrating efforts to locate and extinguish numerous small spot fires. Pockets of unburned fuel continue to burn within the fire perimeter as well.

A contingency line was put in place between the southeast flank of the fire and the Incident Command Post at Cottonwood Ranch. Today fire managers will be examining the possibility of building a second contingency line in this area.

The upper level trough that has been sitting over the area is continuing to move east and as it moves out the winds will return to a southwesterly flow. The National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch for Saturday due to high temperature, low humidity, and the possibility of wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour. Cooler temperatures and a slight chance of precipitation are then forecasted for Sunday and Monday.

The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest and Bureau of Land Management are extending the closure area surrounding the fire. If you are planning a trip over the weekend, please contact a local Forest Service Office or visit the Forest website at http://www.fs.fed.us/r4/htnf for a description of the closure and other recreational opportunities. The closure is in place to provide for both public and firefighter safety and will be lifted when that danger has passed.
