News Release 09/30/08 9am PT

Incident: Lonesome Complex Wildland Fire
Released: 9/30/2008

News Release - 09/30/08 9:00 a.m. PT

Yesterday's Activities: Mop-up is progressing well along the west and north flanks. Yesterday's fire activity was mostly inside of the existing fire perimeter. Ground level fuels were actively burning and single and group tree torching began by mid-day. In the afternoon, active fire behavior up canyons and slopes led to the development of several smoke columns. The activity that led to these columns was all within the containment lines.

Weather and Fire Behavior: Yesterday's winds pushed against the uncontained eastern flank of the fire, moving it back into the existing burn. Temperatures are expected to be down a little today and the humidity is expected to be a little higher in the fire area.

Today's Planned Actions: Firefighters will continue holding and checking the spread of the fire and constructing fireline. Mop-up, chipping and fireline rehabilitation work continue as well.

Firefighters who have been stationed at the three spike camps around the Lonesome Complex will be returning to fire camp at Stewart State Park after finishing their shift today. This will allow for moving firefighting resources around the fire to where they can be most effective. Fire managers will reassess the need to continue using the spike camps.

Closures: A map of the three area closures for the Lonesome Complex is available online at: www.inciweb.org / MAPS.

The closures are in the following general areas:

·§ Crater Lake National Park south of Highway 62

·§ Northwest corner of the Fremont-Winema National Forests, mostly in the Sky Lakes Wilderness

·§ Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest north and south of Red Blanket Canyon as well as in the northern quarter of the Sky Lakes Wilderness.
