Incident: Cub Complex Wildland Fire

Current Status

The Cub Complex, which includes the Onion and Cub Fires, is currently managed by the Southern Area Interagency Management (Red) Team. The fire is located 16 miles southwest of Chester, CA. Lat: 40° 10' 51" Long: 121°33'44". Fire lines have been established around the Onion fire and crews are patrolling and mopping up. On the Cub Fire, a control line has been established along the entire eastern flank. Extreme fire behavior is expected today in the Cub Creek and Rattlesnake Creek areas.

Restrictions and Closures

The Butte County Sheriff's office has issued an Immediate Threat Evacuation order for Jonesville, Butte Meadows, Lassen Scout Camp, and Humbolt Road. Humbolt Road to the intersection with Highway 32 and all tributary roads are closed. Residents should evacuate their homes. The LNF temporary forest closure order remains in effect. The Potato Patch, Alder and Elam Campgrounds in Deer Creek Canyon remain closed. In the Lassen National Forest (LNF), firewood cutting permits have been suspended, campfires are allowed only in designated campgrounds and recreation sites, and vehicles are restricted to roads and trails. Smoking is allowed only in enclosed vehicles or buildings. Contact the LNF for details.

Highway 32 remains closed through Deer Creek Canyon from the junction of Hwy 36 and Hwy 32 south toward Chico, CA. Call CalTrans 1-800-427-ROAD (7623) for current information on road closures.

Plans for

Today

Crews and engines will hold, improve, and mop-up lines on both the Cub and Onion fires. Crews will construct and hold the fireline within the 27N12 Road and helicopters will operate in the Rattlesnake Creek area to slow the progression of the fire. Air Tankers have been requested.

Fire weather

High temperature 90 with minimum Relative Humidity of 12%. Predicted winds out of the north. Hotter and drier weather conditions will contribute to extreme fire behavior.

Other Fire

Information

Fire behavior today will include running surface fire with torching of groups of trees and spotting ahead of the fire front. There is a high probability of intense smoke in the Deer Creek, Chester, and Lake Almanor area.
