Current Fire Situation: Fire behavior remains active under current weather conditions. The wildfires in the Yolla Boly Complex are in remote areas with steep, rugged terrain and very difficult access. The Vinegar Fire and Yellow Fires continue to burn towards each other. Active burning & torching is occurring along the Yellow Fire's western perimeter, pressing the wilderness boundary and the Six Rivers National Forest. Dave Larsen's Northern Rockies National Incident Management Team (IMT) assumed command of the fire complex at 6:00 am today. The Incident Command Post is located at the Community Center in Paskenta, California.
Today's Objectives: Where fire conditions permit, crews will begin constructing fire lines. Field reconnaissance is underway along the uncontained portions of these fires. Rehabilitation efforts have begun on the Trough Fire. On the Vinegar and Yellow Fires, firefighters are positioning themselves to assault the fires with an array of approaches, including a evaluating a potential burn-out operation; setting up a labyrinth of hose-lays to support mop-up; and, scouting out the best locations for additional firelines.
Individual Fire Sizes and Containment: The Yolla Bolly Complex consists of three uncontained fires and one contained fire. Individual fire acreage and containment follows: Vinegar 31,912 acres, 30% contained; Trough: 3,690 acres, 100% contained; Yellow: 20,894 acres, no estimate of containment; Grouse, 1,440 acres, no estimate of containment.
Structures and Resources Threatened: The fires in the complex continue to threaten CAL FIRE and BLM areas to the east, and, privately-owned lands adjacent to the Yolla-Bolly Eel Wilderness. The Yellow Fire threatens to move southwest, with some potential to breach the wilderness boundary.
Area Closures: Call Caltrans 1-800-427-7623 for information about state highways. For information on Forest road closures, contact the respective national forests listed in this update's letterhead. The Yolla-Bolly Wilderness is also closed to public use to provide for public safety and facilitate fire fighting efforts. ADVISORY: Please be aware that while driving in the complex area, you may encounter firefighters working on or near roadways. Please be careful.
