Corral Fire News Release

Corral Fire 55% Contained

Incident: Corral Fire Wildland Fire
Released: 7/5/2008

Yesterday, winds were gusty at about 20 mph in the afternoon with a slight increase in humidity at the fire area at 18%. This gave firefighters another day of being able to see areas of undetected hot spots and react to extinguish them before they grow. Fire activity in the Northwestern perimeter of the fire was mainly this "spotting" ahead of the main fire and no large torching or running movement of the fire. Firefighters made good progress on the required work of cooling further into the "black" from the suppression lines to strengthen those lines from any wind driven fire jumping the lines. It is a necessity on these fires to continue this type of work and obtain eventual control. Air resources assigned to the Corral fire once again were shared with crews responding to initial attack fires in the area.

Today's Planned Events:

All portions of the fire perimeter will be in a patrol, mop-up, or interior work once again. It is truly the "phase of any fire, toward the end, that requires tough, dirty work", Incident Commander Dave Larsen told the firefighters as he thanked them for their hard work.

The rehabilitation group will begin to return bulldozer lines that are within the fire perimeter that were dug in early on in attempts to stop the fire. As this fire continues to cool, rehabilitation efforts will follow.

As the season intensifies, it's a reminder to the public to be careful with and around fire, and for those who own homes in fire-prone areas, to take the few simple steps needed to help their property to become more defensible. Assess your individual risk to wildland fire and act to mitigate that risk. Advice and assistance on how to develop a plan tailored to your property is available by contacting your local fire authorities, CAL FIRE, or go to http://www.firesafecouncil.org/ .

Special Concerns:

Because of the high fire danger, CAL FIRE has suspended all burning permits in Lassen and Modoc counties. The Lassen National Forest has fire restrictions in place. Firewood cutting has been suspended, campfires are allowed only in designated recreation sites, and, vehicles are restricted to roads & trails. Eagle Lake is a popular destination for summer visitors; all recreational facilities remain open.

Independence Day weekend revelers are reminded that all fireworks are prohibited

in the Lassen National Forest and on state and private lands.
