Umpqua National Forest Fire Update

ROSEBURG, OR - August 28, 2008, 8 a.m. - The Rattle Fire, in the Boulder Creek Wilderness, is 620 acres and zero percent contained. All roads and trails leading into the wilderness are closed as crews continue with indirect line construction. Rob Batten's Blue Mountain Management Team is handling the fire until August 31, when a new team will assume management. For more information go to the Inciweb Incident Information System website at http://inciweb.org/incident/1477 or call the Complex information line at (541) 496-9609.

Across the forest initial attack groups are on standby in preparation for sleeper fires. Other crews continue with mop-up of contained fires.

"The public can help us by using extra care when recreating during this long holiday weekend," said Joe Linn, Umpqua National Forest Fire Staff Officer. "With temperatures continuing to climb and warmer winds anticipated, there is the risk of additional fires."

People headed into the Umpqua National Forest will find many campgrounds open for the Labor Day holiday weekend. Campfires and camp stoves are limited to developed recreation sites such as campgrounds, lookouts and trailheads. Liquefied and bottle gas stoves and heaters may be used for cooking and heating. Please completely extinguish any campfires before leaving the site.
