Incident: Two Top Fire Wildfire
FIRE NAME: Two Top Fire DATE OF DETECTION: Friday August 30 2013 CAUSE: Lightning CURRENT SIZE: 148 acres (11 acre increase due to more accurate mapping) CONTAINMENT: 80 % LOCATION: The fire is located on the Continental Divide northwest of Reas Pass. It is approximately 8 air miles from the town of West Yellowstone. AGENCY: Gallatin National Forest and Caribou-Targhee National Forest
PERSONNEL AND RESOURCES ON THE FIRE: 1 medium helicopter and 1 light helicopter; 143 firefighters and support personnel
These fires do not pose a threat to area residents or visitors. US-20 US-191 and US-287 are all open as are all businesses in the communities of West Yellowstone Montana and Island Park Idaho. The West Entrance to Yellowstone National Park is open. Very little smoke has been seen since Wednesday.
YESTERDAY’S FIRE ACTIVITY: Crews began the removal of equipment from the west side of the fire area. There has been no growth in the last several days; however firefighters continued to cool the fire edge along the north flank. Areas within the perimeter were still smoldering with occasional trees catching fire.
TODAY’S PLANNED ACTIVITY: Firefighters are getting closer to full containment and fire managers are working on downsizing equipment and personnel. Efforts are underway in the fire area to prevent future erosion and clear fallen trees on trails and roads.
CLOSURES & OTHER INFORMATION: The Forest Service area closure is still in effect due to firefighter traffic and public safety concerns. A map of the closure area as well as any updated fire information will also be posted online at http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/3714/ and at the West Yellowstone Chamber of Commerce and the various pullouts along Highway 20. FIRE WEATHER: Saturday is expected to be a partly cloudy day with a chance of thunderstorms. Relative humidity will be 36-41%. Temperatures will be in the in the 70’s. Winds are expected to be 5- 30 mph but they could be stronger around thunderstorms.
