Riddle Creek Fire Update
Chelan—On August 11th, a lightning fire was reported on the Chelan Ranger District in a remote area of the Glacier Peak Wilderness near the boundary with North Cascades National Park. The Riddle Creek Fire is estimated at less than one acre in size located approximately two miles up the Riddle Creek drainage from Lake Chelan. The fire has been monitored by aircraft and by boat over the last week as the location of the fire has been determined to be hazardous for firefighters due to the steep, inaccessible terrain.
Burning primarily in timber and brush, the fire behavior remains moderate with creeping and smoldering activity. Smoke from the fire will remain visible from the north end of Lake Chelan as well as from portions of the Stehekin Valley as long as the fire remains active. Fire Managers from the Chelan Ranger District will continue to monitor the fire until the area received a substantial amount of precipitation or snow.
Three North Cascade National Park permitted structures have been identified along the shore of Lake Chelan at the bottom of the Riddle Creek drainage. At this time these structures have not been identified as threaten by the Riddle Creek Fire, but continued fire spread may require these properties to be protected before fire season ends.
The Forest Service and National Park Service will continue to work together to access the fire. A management action plan is in place should the fire activity prompt further suppression needs. Suppression efforts would likely involve the use of water drops from helicopters to slow the progression of the fire.
There are no threats to the communities of Stehekin or Holden Village and no trail closures at this time.
