Kelley Fire Continues to Move East-14,761 Acres - Update for Sept. 2, 2013
Incident: Kelley Fire Wildfire
September 2, 2013
Size in acres
Summary: On Saturday, August 24, 2013 a thunderstorm ignited the Kelley Fire 7 miles southeast of Featherville, Idaho. The fire is burning in a steep, remote area and is not easily accessible by fire crews. The fire started at about 10 acres and has now grown to over 14,000 acres.
Current Situation: Last nights infrared flight shows the fire acreage has grown to 14,761 acres. The fire made another big run and spotted across the South Fork Boise River near Jumbo Creek. The fire continues to make moderate upslope runs, group torching and short range spotting. A few fingers of fire have crept down towards the river in the Deadwood Creek area. The fire has pushed east about a mile and a half south of the Big Hole. Air Resources now have a portable batch plant on site for retardant. This enables the Type 1 helicopters to make more accurate, effective retardant drops right where the fire crews need them. These retardant drops are not only more accurate than the large aircraft retardant drops, they have quicker turnaround times.
Public Meeting Scheduled: A public meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at 7 pm at the American Legion Hall in Fairfield. Fire managers will discuss the progression of the fire and explain their operational strategies for managing the fire. A representative from Idaho Department of Fish and Game will also be present at the meeting to answer questions on how the closure areas are affecting hunting season.
