Incident: Incendiary Creek Wildfire
Tuesday, crews further improved and secured line along the northern end of the fire. Due to high humidity, burnout operations were not possible. As a result, fire managers modified tactics to include direct attack on the fire in areas along the northern end which still have unburned fuels between the fire and the contingency lines. Containment lines along the southern and eastern fire perimeter continue to hold, and firefighters completed mop up approximately 200 feet in from the containment lines.
Due to continued security of containment lines around the fire’s southern and eastern perimeter, at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 27, the Clearwater County Sheriff’s office rescinded Stage 2 “Evacuation Warning” for residents north of Lolo Creek, in the vicinity of Lolo Creek, Hidden Valley, and Three Mile roads. A Stage 1 Protection Alert remains, which is simply an alert that there is an incident nearby. Residents should still remain alert to weather changes and fire behavior, as changed conditions could still result in the need to re-escalate the evacuation status.
On the west side of the fire along Lolo Creek, aerial patrols and infrared imagery will be necessary for some time in order to ensure that the fire still has not spotted across Lolo Creek. Because the Lolo Creek canyon is so narrow with steep cliffs in places, it would not be possible to perform safe or effective fireline construction along the bottom of this drainage. So far, the fire has not crossed Lolo Creek; it is burning only along the northern side.
Today’s suppression efforts will again focus on the north end of the fire. Crews will further secure containment lines and attack any hot spots. Helicopter support will be used as needed. On the eastern and southern flanks of the fire, crews will mop up hot spots and begin a regular patrol regimen.
Closures: In order to ensure public and firefighter safety and reduce traffic congestion, several roads in the fire area remain closed, including portions of the Three Mile Road, between Schmidt Mill Road and Lolo Creek Road, as well as portions of Lolo Creek Road, from Three Mile Road to just south of the Idaho County line. In addition, a Temporary Flight Restriction remains in effect surrounding the fire area.
