Incident: Incendiary Creek Wildfire
The Incendiary Creek Fire was caused by lightning Sunday, August 18th and is currently burning in steep, rugged canyons along the northern side of Lolo Creek, between an unnamed tributary on the north and Lolo Creek Road to the south, approximately five miles southwest of Weippe, Idaho.
Friday, crews took advantage of weather conditions to focus on dozer line construction on the north end of the fire, building contingency lines and improving access, while hand crews looked for hot spots within 200 feet of lines on the east side. A small spot fire was discovered outside of containment lines on the north end of the fire; it was suppressed with the assistance of the helicopter. No spots have been found on the southern side of Lolo Creek, and the fire continues to hold north of Lolo Creek. The Clearwater County Sheriff, in cooperation with fire management officials, lifted evacuation orders in the Lolo Crossing area as of 6 PM Friday. However, roads in that area remain closed to public travel due to safety concerns and heavy fire traffic.
Today, suppression efforts will center on laying more than a mile of hoses along the un-named drainage on the northeast flank of the fire in preparation for mopup. Heavy fuels will be removed from the drainage to reduce the chance of fire crossing to the north. A chance of thunderstorms and gusty winds will remain for another day or two. Firefighters will continue to mop up and watch for spot fires around the entire fire perimeter.
Closures: For public safety, the Clearwater County Sheriff’s office has closed access to several roads in the fire area, including portions of the Three Mile Road, between Schmit Mill Road and Lolo Creek Road, as well as portions of Lolo Creek Road, from Three Mile Road to just south of the Idaho County line. In addition, a Temporary Flight Restriction is in effect surrounding the fire area.
Evacuations: As of 6 PM Friday, August 23rd, the Stage 3 Request for Evacuation was lifted for the thirteen residences north of Lolo Creek, south of Three Mile Road, in the Lolo Creek Road and Hidden Valley Road areas. The area remains in Stage 2 Evacuation warning. Roads in this designated area remain closed to public travel.
