Last Night’s Activity: Engine crews patrolled fire lines throughout the night and reported no significant activity along Highway 12 or Sleeman Gulch road. The fire continued to slowly advance to the east, backing down the slope above the south fork of Sleeman Gulch.Today’s Planned Activity: A red flag warning is in effect from late this afternoon through Friday for lightning and gusty winds of up to 50 mph associated with dry, changing to wet, thunderstorms.
Yesterday firefighters constructed a contingency line above the homes in Sleeman Gulch in preparation for today’s predicted weather. If necessary, they will fire off this line if the wildfire approaches this area. Their focus on the east side of the fire today will be direct fireline construction from Highway 12 up slope along the fire edge and structure protection around the residences in Sleeman Gulch and along the Highway 12 corridor within the fire perimeter. Further east, additional contingency line construction will begin from Deadman Gulch towards the south. Firefighters have established a good black line along Highway 12 and will begin mopup around homes in that area. Line construction will continue to close the loop around the west and northwest sides of the fire. Air resources will continue to be available as weather permits with the incoming storms.
Special Concerns: Traffic on Highway 12. Residents living along Highway 12 will be allowed to return to their homes by permit from 9 to 12 noon today. Permits will be issued until 11:30 by the Missoula County Sheriff at the ICP located at the Lolo Community Center.
Prevention Message: All federal, state, and private lands are in Stage 1 fire restrictions.
