Granite Fire Being Managed For Multiple Objectives
Leavenworth, Washington— The Granite Fire is a small wilderness fire located approximately nineteen miles west of Leavenworth in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, part of the Icicle Creek watershed.
The fire is 122 acres in size and burning upper-slope in scattered subalpine fir, subalpine larch and brush. The fire is in a remote area, with no structures or resource values at risk. The Granite Fire is located on a steep ridge top, ringed by rock talus slopes. French Creek is located at the bottom of the slopes and much of the vegetation is still somewhat moist from recent thunderstorms and shading of steep slopes. Smoke is visible from Leavenworth periodically.
Fire Specialists determined this wildfire meets the criteria for management for multiple objectives. To be eligible for this type of management, specific criteria and objectives must be met.
The first criterion is for the Granite Fire to be a wildfire with an unplanned natural ignition (lightning). Other primary objectives are firefighter and public safety, protecting values at risk including campgrounds and trailheads, and being able to allow fire to play its role in wilderness ecosystems. The steep, inaccessible terrain does pose a high risk to firefighter safety.
Fire specialists can alter objectives and strategy as fire conditions change.
- For public safety concerns, Klonaqua Lakes FS Trail #1563 and French Creek Trail #1595 from its intersection with Snowall Creek Trail #1560 and its intersection with the Paddy-Go-Easy Trail are closed
Visitors are reminded that campfire restrictions are in place and danger of wildfire is high; please check at local ranger district offices for current conditions and restrictions.
