Update September 9, 2013
Incident: Forks Complex (includes Butler Fire ) Wildfire
Fire Weather and Fire Behavior
Sunday’s high temperatures and low humidity will continue through Monday. A Red Flag Alert is predicted for winds starting Monday evening around 8 p.m. until Tuesday 8 a.m. North/Northeast winds 5-15 mph are forecast with gusts to 25. Fire activity in brushy fuels and unburned interior islands is expected. Recent precipitation influenced only the lighter fuels which are dry again with very high receptivity to fire. Upslope heating in the canyons continues to spread fire uphill.
Containment lines continue to hold successfully. Yesterday the warming and drying trend allowed for an upslope run of about 30-acres to the ridgeline of the north side of China Creek on the western perimeter. Defensive firing operations secured this corner of the fire on Sunday. Within containment lines smoldering and creeping occurred in isolated pockets of accumulated fuels. Keeping the fire out of Nordheimer drainage continues to be a primary objective in shortening the duration of the fire.
In the southeast patrol and rehabilitation is being completed by specialized equipment as prescribed in the rehabilitation plan.
The northeast north and northwest areas are in patrol status.
Residents of Forks may expect to experience helicopter operations overhead in the afternoon active burning period. Helicopters are delivering water-drops to moderate fire in areas of higher activity.
Salmon River Complex
Rehabilitation work has finished. A reduction of area closure around the Salmon Fire is expected sometime this week.
Forks Complex Alerts
Salmon River and Sawyers bar roads are open to the public but motorists should expect possible delays and temporary closures due to the continued potential for rollout along the road.
A Forest Closure is in effect around the Butler Fire and Salmon River Complex on the Klamath and Six Rivers National Forests. The purpose of this order is public safety due to active pockets of fire within containment lines. To see the full Forest Closure Order visit: www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5430601.pdf
Remember that campfire restriction is still in place on the Klamath National Forest. Campfires are allowed only in designated campgrounds with Forest Service fire rings. See http://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/klamath/alerts-notices/ aid=18398
