Today’s Actions: Firefighters will mop up, patrol and hold the handlines today to reduce the threat of spot fires. If necessary, crews will deepen the burnout from the fires edge down Tanner Ridge toward the Sawyers Bar Road. They will patrol and hold the handline from Yellow Jacket Ridge to Sawyers Bar Road. Hotshot crews will be inserted into the spot fire in upper Specimen Creek. Structure defense will continue around the community of Sawyers Bar, including daily sprinkler system maintenance and testing.
Fire Behavior: Rolling material continues to be a concern for firefighters as they patrol and hold the fire within existing containment lines. Pockets of brush and down trees are expected to continue to burn today along Dead Horse Gulch and Murderers Gulch on the west end of the fire. On the east side, interior backing to the mouth of Jackass Gulch is expected. A Northwest wind may begin to affect the fire this afternoon.
Air Quality: Clean air respite centers are still available at the Happy Camp Community Resource Center, HUB Communities Resource Center in Montague, Scott Valley Family Resource Center in Fort Jones, Madrone Senior Center at the Yreka Community Center, Mt. Shasta Community Resource Center and Dorris City Hall. A daily air quality report for Forks of Salmon, Sawyers Bar, Etna, Fort Jones and Yreka will be distributed with the morning update and posted on the Klamath National Forest Website at http://www.fs.usda.gov/klamath.
