Siskiyou County road crews were successful in clearing Sawyers Bar Road near Dougherty Bluff and the road reopened yesterday. Residents should exercise caution when travelling near the fire area.
Today’s Actions: Firefighters will mop up, patrol and hold the handlines today to reduce the threat of spot fires. If necessary, crews will continue to burnout from the fires edge down Tanner Ridge toward the Sawyers Bar Road. They will patrol and hold the handline from Yellow Jacket Ridge downhill towards Sawyers Bar Road. Structure defense will continue around the community of Sawyers Bar, including daily sprinkler system maintenance and testing.
The Red Cross Shelter has been closed but will reopen if requested. Clean air respite centers are still available at the Happy Camp Community Resource Center, HUB Communities Resource Center in Montague, Scott Valley Family Resource Center in Fort Jones, Madrone Senior Center at the Yreka Community Center, Mt. Shasta Community Resource Center and Dorris City Hall.
Fire Behavior and Air Quality: Last night, rolling material was a concern for firefighters as they patrolled and held the fire within existing containment lines. Observed fire behavior included creeping and smoldering in heavy dead and down fuels
On the west side of the fire today, interior growth will be westerly from Dead Horse Gulch to the ridge between Dead Horse Gulch and Murderers Gulch. Fire growth may be subdued, due to slightly lower temperatures in the morning with increased growth in the afternoon. The fire will back down to Jackass Gulch on the east side.
A daily air quality report for Forks of Salmon, Sawyers Bar, Etna, Fort Jones and Yreka will be distributed with the morning update and posted on the Klamath National Forest Website at http://www.fs.usda.gov/klamath.
