August 15 AM Update
Incident: Salmon River Complex Wildfire
Salmon River Complex Update
Date Started: July 31, 2013
Size: 12,021 acres
Percent Contained: 55%
Estimated Cost to Date: $13,200,00
Est. Date of Containment: 08/18/2013
Total Personnel: 1,189
Committed Resources: 30 crews, 53 engines, 5 dozers, 21 water tenders, and 6 helicopters
Firefighters were successful in containing a small spot-fire southeast Tanners Peak ridgeline. A rockslide has closed Sawyers Bar Road near Dougherty Bluff blocking access for several residents. Siskiyou County road crews are working to clear the road today. The estimated date of containment of the fire was revised to August 18.
Planned Actions: Today if weather allows, firefighters will continue firing and holding operations along the ridge between Yellow Jacket Ridge and Sawyers Bar Road—west of Murderers Gulch. Firefighters will also conduct firing operations and continue to hold the established handline west of Tanners Peak on the east side of the fire west of Neilon Gulch. Crews will continue to reinforce containment lines. Perimeter structure defense will continue around the community of Sawyers Bar, including daily sprinkler system maintenance and testing.
The Red Cross Shelter has been closed and will reopen if requested. Clean air respite centers are still available at the Happy Camp Community Resource Center, HUB Communities Resource Center in Montague, Scott Valley Family Resource Center in Fort Jones, Madrone Senior Center at the Yreka Community Center, Mt. Shasta Community Resource Center and Dorris City Hall.
Fire Behavior and Air Quality: Last night’s observed fire behavior included creeping and smoldering in heavy dead and down fuels. Rolling material was a concern for firefighters as they patrolled and held the fire within existing containment lines.
The fire is anticipated to grow on the west side westerly towards China Gulch today. Due to firing operations, growth will continue from Yellow Jacket Ridge south to Murderers Gulch. Growth on the east side of the fire will be southwesterly towards the mouth of Jackass Gulch and Sawyers Bar Road.
A daily air quality report for Forks of Salmon, Sawyers Bar, Etna, Fort Jones and Yreka will be distributed with the morning update and posted on the Klamath National Forest Website at http://www.fs.usda.gov/klamath.
