Big Windy Fire Update, August 28, 2013
Incident: Big Windy Complex Wildfire
Fire Update – 08/28/2013 9:00 a.m. PDT
Yesterday’s Fire Operations: Crews took advantage of last weekend’s rain by building fireline closer to the fire’s edge on the west flank of the Big Windy Fire. Mop-up and patrol operations are progressing around the southern end of the fire, and the hotshot crew working along Howard Creek on the northeast end of the fire has completed their mission and will return by river rafts today. Minimal fire activity was observed in the Howard Creek area, which will continue to be monitored from the air.
Today’s Fire Operations: Crews will continue to construct fireline along the west flank in preparation for burnout operations scheduled for the weekend, when lower fuel moisture will allow for more effective burning within the established fireline. The remainder of the fire is in mop-up, patrol and monitor status. This is the last day a structure protection group will work in the Galice area due to the reduced threat to the community, but they will be available should the threat increase.
Trail Closure Change: The closure of the Rogue River Trail from Grave Creek to the Rogue River Ranch has been lifted.
Evacuation Change: The Level 2 evacuation north of the Rogue River and south of the Marial Byway has been down-graded to Level 1. The Level 1 evacuation in the Galice area remains in effect.
Weather: The forecast calls for slightly warmer weather today with temperatures reaching the mid to upper 80’s. Relative humidity will fall to 20-40% with terrain driven winds increasing in the early afternoon after the inversion lifts over the fire.
A Community Meeting will be held at the Galice Community Hall at 3 pm today. Incident Management Team members will provide a Big Windy Fire update and discuss plans for upcoming fire suppression operations.
