Big Windy Fire Update August 17, 2013
Incident: Big Windy Complex Wildfire
Big Windy Complex: A community meeting will be held at the Galice Community Hall, located at 10821 Galice Road, at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 18, 2013. Members of Pacific Northwest Team 3 will provide an overview of the fire and discuss planned actions. Local agency representatives will also be present. The public is invited to attend.
Day-use rafting traffic is expected to increase this weekend on the Rogue River. Please be aware of firefighting personnel and equipment on the roads as well as the river. The wild section of the Rogue River remains open with restrictions. Boaters are encouraged to use Argo or Almeda Dock for boat ramp access rather than Grave Creek. This will help reduce congestion with fire traffic. Please contact the Smullin Visitor Center at 541-479-3735 if you have questions about river operations.
Yesterday’s Fire Operations: The aerial ignition burnout operation was successful in the south and southeast portions of the fire and will continue again today. Good progress continued on the northern contingency lines and Eden Spike Camp, which supported personnel on the north side of the river, was decommissioned.
Today’s Fire Operations: Crews will continue to burn out and secure the southern flank. As conditions are favorable, they will burn out and hold along the western flank. Extremely steep slopes, oak litter and rocky conditions are creating challenges. Crews are working diligently to hold and secure lines where burnout operations have been completed.
Weather: The marine air influence will be diminishing today. Any low clouds and fog that developed overnight should lift and burn off by 11:00AM. Humidity will decrease today and warmer temperatures are predicted. Fire behavior is expected to increase this afternoon.
Evacuations: A Level 2 evacuation is in place north of the Rogue River and south of the Marial Byway. Residents should be prepared to leave if asked. A Level 1 evacuation is in effect in the Galice area and west where hazards from the approaching fire may be severe. Residents should take precautionary measures to protect persons with special needs, pets, livestock, and mobile property.
