Big Windy Fire Update August 14, 2013
Incident: Big Windy Complex Wildfire
Big Windy Complex: The wild section of the Rogue River is now open with restrictions. For questions about river operations, please contact the Smullin Visitor Center at 541-479-3735.
Yesterday’s Fire Operations: Crews continued working on contingency lines to be used if the fire moves north of the river. Burnout was completed along the fire’s southeast flank to strengthen the containment line. Contingency line construction continues south of the river on the east and northwest flanks. Containment line is nearing completion on the northwest flank. A small amount of aerial ignition occurred on the fire’s southern tip, at the head of Howard Creek, to add depth to the containment line. Bucket work was used near the bottom of Howard Creek to keep the fire on the east facing slope and the west side of the creek.
Today’s Fire Operations: Continue burnout operations on the east flank and continue to prep lines on the west flank for a burnout. North of the river, crews will continue to construct contingency line. Completion of the contingency lines should take another three or four days, with the majority of the remaining work on the northeast flank.
Weather: The Haines Index, which measures the potential for dry, unstable air to influence fire growth, was raised to 5 today. Warm and dry temperatures will continue. This morning’s inversion is expected to lift by mid-morning, creating a strong potential for smoke impacts. Smoke impacts from burnout operations should be expected.
Evacuations: A Level 2 evacuation is in place for residences north of the Rogue River and south of the Marial Byway. Residents in this vicinity should be prepared to leave if asked. A Level 1 evacuation is in effect in the Galice area and west. Hazards from the approaching fire may be severe in these locations and residents should take precautionary measures to protect persons with special needs, pets, livestock, and mobile property.Closures:
