Whiskey Complex Update, Wednesday, August 28
Incident: Whiskey Complex Wildfire
The Tiller Ranger District is working with fire officials to reduce the size and number of the closed areas near the Whiskey Complex prior to Labor Day weekend. Recreational areas that will soon be open but were closed earlier in the week include Ash Flat Campground, South Umpqua Falls Campground, and Cover Campground. Remaining closed because of fire-related activity are Butler Butte, Whisky Camp, and Black Canyon Campground. Forest Road 29 is closed at the west end from Road 28 upstream along Jackson Creek to its confluence with Squaw Creek.
The closure boundary east of the Whiskey Fire will move substantially closer to the fire area. Instead of Forest Road 68, the eastern boundary of the closure will be Squaw Creek and Donegan Creek, then south to Tucker Gap, a reduction in area of approximately 16 square miles. Public use restrictions have been lifted, removing restrictions on campfires, smoking, and chainsaw use. Industrial Fire Precaution Levels are also being reduced, potentially resulting in an increase in logging traffic along the South Umpqua road system. Recreationists are reminded to be especially careful with fire and traffic this weekend.
High temperatures today are expected to range from 77 degrees at higher elevations to 87 degrees at lower elevations within the fire area. Relative humidity may drop as low as 25%, with light winds from the southwest.
From high points around the fire, many smokes are easily visible in the Soup Creek, Whiskey Creek, and Beaver Creek drainages, where mop-up operations are continuing. Eighteen miles of grading will also be initiated today, in addition to chipping operations and other rehabilitation work.
Tiller District resources detected and responded to two fires on Tuesday. One fire, northeast of Butler Butte, was contained at one-tenth of an acre, while the other fire just west of Beaver Swamp Trail Head still has an engine crew working on it.
