Whiskey Complex Fire UpdateOregon Interagency Incident Management Team 3, Incident Commander: Doug Johnson August 24, 2013 - 9:00 a.m. Fire Information Center: 541-839-3099
Special Information:The Oregon Interagency Incident Management Team 3 (OIIMT3) wishes to thank the Umpqua National Forest, Tiller Ranger District, Douglas Forest Protection Agency, multiple partners, and the surrounding communities for the great cooperation and support while we safely managed suppression efforts on the Whiskey Complex.
The Southern Cascades Incident Management Type 3 team, John Poet ICT3, is meeting today with Forest managers for an in-brief of the fire. Their team will shadow OIIMT3 into the evening and assume command of the Whiskey Complex on Sunday, August 25 at 6 am.
The fire was quiet following the previous day’s storms. By noon there was no evidence of the rain, however humidity levels were elevated. Some interior, isolated, single tree torching on the southeastern section of the fire occurred but was no threat to containment lines. No burning operations were planned and crews patrolled perimeters, removed excess equipment and monitored interior smokes.
Crews on the Buckeye Fire, which crossed Forest Road 28, are working on rehabilitation and removing all excess equipment. The road is open to the public and everyone is asked to drive slowly. Some smoking stumps and debris may be visible from the fire area and should not be reported.
The Whiskey Fire is 90% contained. Areas of the fire where rehabilitation has been complete are now in patrol status. Crews have chipped four and one half miles of woody debris and slash on the northeast perimeter to rehabilitate containment lines.
Today crews will continue mop-up, patrol and chipping assignments, working toward total containment by shifts end. The new management team will observe operations and formulate plans for rehabilitation of suppression areas.
The Umpqua National Forest has revised the Forest Order near the Whiskey Complex. The area closure remains in effect around the Buckeye and Whiskey Fires while some access roads in the vicinity have been re-opened. These roads include the South Umpqua River Road (Forest Road 28) and parts of Forest Road 29 providing access to popular recreation areas including South Umpqua Falls Day Use, Camp Comfort, and Skookum Pond.
