Please be advised that access to the Umpqua National Forest from the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest via Forest Road 6620 (Abbott Prairie) is closed at the Forest boundary.
Public tours of the Incident Command Post, located at Milo Adventist Academy will be held Saturday, August 17 at 10 am and 2 pm. Wear sturdy shoes due to the uneven terrain. Tours will last 45 minutes to an hour. Leave pets at home please. Tours will begin at the Information yurt.
Crews were successful in widening the control line on the eastern side of the fire utilizing hand drip torches, weather, topography, and patience. A swing shift monitored into the evening to ensure the fire remained within the planned perimeter. Today’s actions will be duplicated where fuels are able to be safely ignited. The southeastern corner of the fir also initiated burn out operations yesterday. Crews are being very deliberate in where fire is placed in order to achieve a low intensity burn. Crews will continue to utilize the same tactics in this area with aerial support to cool aggressive fire, Dozer line will be constructed between Forest Service Roads 2925 and 600 (placed east of Fawn Creek approximately one mile in length), reducing the burnout size. Today, where possible, burnout operations will occur to increase the distance between unburned fuels and the main fire. The remainder of the fire perimeters are in patrol, mop up and rehabilitation stages.
South Umpqua River Highway, Forest Road 28, remains closed. Crews will continue to reduce hazards and chip debris in preparation of reopening the road.
Helicopters supported burnout operations with water drops, cooling hotter areas of the fire. Today the air resources will assist as the weather safely allows flying.
Whiskey Fire is now 55% contained and had a little growth inside the east and southeast perimeter.
Buckeye Fire is 100% contained and also in patrol status.
Smith Ridge Fire is 100% contained and in patrol status.
For fire firefighter and public safety, the large area closure around the Whiskey Fire remains in effect; major roads in the area are closed. Please see the inciweb or Whiskey Complex blog for full information.
