Mountain Fire Update #8 July 20, 2013 6:00 PM
Incident: Mountain Wildfire
FIRE UPDATE #8 July 20, 2013 6:00 P.M.
Current Situation: Today, firefighters made tremendous progress on containing the fire. With higher humidity and lower temperatures, firefighters were able to make significant gains in the area above Trails End. This morning, the Palm Springs tram transported hand crews to fight fire along the northeastern flank of the fire. Overnight, crews will continue to reinforce and build containment lines. The threat of increased fire behavior tonight remains high in some areas due to the heavy fuels and the lack of significant rain in this area.
Changing Weather: Predicted east winds tonight may bring an increased chance of rain. A flash flood watch is in place as even relatively moderate amounts of rain can cause soil erosion in burned areas. If there is rain at higher elevations, Herkey Creek could experience high flows, creating additional hazards for firefighters.
Evacuations: Evacuations were lifted for the communities of Trails End and Camp Joe Scherman. Apple Canyon, Bonita Vista, Fobes Canyon, and Pine Springs Ranch areas are also open to residents. The Evacuation Warning issued for Pine Cove is still in place. All other Evacuation Orders, including Idyllwild and Fern Valley, are still in place.
Evacuation Centers: Evacuation centers established by the Red Cross (1-888-831-0031) are located at Hemet High School, Hamilton High School, and Beaumont High School.
Road Closures: Fobes Ranch Road is now open to traffic. State Highway 74 remains open. State Highway 243 is closed from the intersection of State Highway 74 to the Nature Center, south of Pine Cove.
