Stuart Creek 2 Fire #280 Is Growing Outside of Military Lands
Incident: Stuart Creek 2 Wildfire
FAIRBANKS – The Bureau of Land Management Alaska Fire Service reports that the Stuart Creek 2 Fire #280 that began on June 19 is estimated at 45,000 acres and continues to grow to the north in the direction of the town of Two Rivers.
The fire was burning in a limited fire management option area but values at risk on military lands required protection. It has now crossed onto land outside of the installation and is 4.5 miles from the Chena River. Multiple retardant tankers, water-scooping aircraft, fire engines, dozers and smokejumpers are working the fire. Additional crews and equipment have been requested. A Type 2 Incident Management Team (IMT) arrived Jul1 to manage the incident. Due to the rapid growth and resource requirement, a Type 1 Team was requested.
The large fire growth over the past few days has been weather and fuel driven, with winds from a large dry thunderstorm yesterday passing over the area and increasing fire activity. Hot, dry weather conditions with associated winds are expected to continue over the next several days. There are smoke impacts on Eielson AFB and Fairbanks International.
