Incident: This wildland fire started on 6/15/2013; cause was lightning.
Location: 30 miles southeast of Montrose, CO.
Jurisdiction: Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, & Gunnison National Forests
Cooperating Agencies: BLM, Gunnison County
Incident Commander: Rick Kusicko, Northern Rockies Type II Incident Management Team (IMT). The Incident Command Post (ICP) is located at the Columbine Middle School in Montrose.
Current Size: 415 acres Containment: 0%
Structures Threatened: 35 residences, commercial properties, and outbuildings
Structures Lost: none
Status: The fire is actively burning in Spruce/Fir fuels. Steep, inaccessible terrain, as well as extremely dry fuels has made suppression efforts very difficult.
Yesterday’s Activities: Firefighters worked on constructing contingency lines ahead of the fire while helicopters dropped water on the inaccessible areas. Engine crews set up pumps and hoses around cabins which may be threatened.
Current Resources: Eight 20-person crews, ten engines, two dozers, one water tender and three helicopters. Total personnel: approximately 250.
Today’s Activities: The National Weather Service has issued a ‘Red Flag Warning’ for the fire area on Monday. They are predicting a dry cold front, with gusty, erratic winds, low relative humidity and extremely dry fuels.
Crews will continue constructing contingency containment lines on the north and west flanks of the fire and put out hotspots and mopping up. Crews continue to work on structure protection measures around scattered cabins in the area.
Restrictions/Closures: A ‘Closure Order’ has been issued by the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests prohibiting use of National Forest System roads and trails that access the East Fork Fire area. This closure order is posted on www.inciweb.org for detailed information. In addition, a temporary flight restriction (TFR) is in effect surrounding the East Fork Fire area.
On June 24, 2013, the Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forest implemented Stage 1 fire restrictions due to high fire danger and ongoing fire activity. The prohibitions relate to campfires and smoking on National Forest System lands in the area.
For more on the closures and restrictions please go to the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forest website (www.fs.usda.gov/gmug). For updated fire information call the Fire Information Line at 970-874-6602.
