Vallecito and Steam Fire update
November, 4 2012 4 p.m.
The Vallecito Fire is approximately at 1,000 acres and is continuing to grow in the general direction of Miller Mountain. The fire is still within the perimeter of the 2002 Missionary Ridge Fire. The fire is currently burning in the upper reaches of Red Creek. The fire continues to burn in heavy dead and down fuels. The rate of growth is averaging 100 acres per day.
The Steam Fire, approximately ½ acre, is 2 miles east of State Hwy 550. Latitude: N 37 degrees 31".1"/ Longitude: W 107 degrees 40'. Smoke is visible again today.
The US Forest Service is monitoring these fires and wants the public to know that the Steam fire will become dormant or visible on a day to day basis. The Vallecito Fire is currently in heavy fuels and in more favorable conditions for higher fire activity. The resulting increased fire behavior will continue to produce a highly visible column of smoke on a daily basis.
Today crews made good progress constructing a dozer line on the SW corner above Jack Creek. This line will be continued to be secured for the remainder of today's shift.
People who have questions about smoke in the area of the Vallecito Fire please contact the Vallecito Fire Information Officer for additional information.
