The Coal Fire started on Friday, September 21, 2012 at approximately 3:30PM. It is currently 241 acres and 50% contained. It is located on the east side of I5, near the Gilman Road area (Exit #698). Brian Ramsey is the Incident Commander. The Coal Fire is just south of the Salt Creek Fire area that burned in the beginning of August.
The Coal Fire displayed aggressive fire behavior yesterday during the day light hours. However cooler temperatures overnight, combined with a very aggressive initial attack period that continued throughout the night, led to significant progress in fire containment efforts. Initial attack efforts were accomplished by engines, hand crews, helicopters, and air tankers.
At the height of this fire, 453 people were assigned, but resources will be released throughout this morning. The overall number of personnel is expected to be significantly reduced by the end of Saturday.
There were some evacuations yesterday afternoon in the Lakeview Estates area, but all evacuation orders have now been lifted. Additionally, all roads are currently open. The northbound lane of I5 is restricted to one-lane traffic to ensure firefighter safety for those working along the I5 corridor. Motorists should be aware of the potential for slowed traffic and the potential for driving conditions to be affected by smoke.
Continuing fire containment efforts are in progress. Structure protection activities continue and have been successful thus far. Hoselays are being installed to deliver water to the fire lines and assist firefighters in securing the fire through mop-up efforts. Full containment is currently estimated for Sunday, September 23rd.Additional Information: Additional fire information can be obtained by calling 530-378-4856.
