UPDATE: Red Cross Continues to Provide Aid in North Central Washington -
September 18, 2012, Wenatchee, WA - The Apple Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross continues to provide fire support for those affected by the fires in North Central Washington. Currently:
· The shelter at the Seventh Day Adventist Church on 5th and Western (Wenatchee) is being placed on stand-by status as of 9:00PM on Tuesday, September 18th. This means that the shelter is closed and not being continually staffed during either the day or night, but the Red Cross is prepared to re-open the shelter quickly if the need arises. Area residents are welcome to call or stop by the chapter office if they are looking for information about the fires and available Red Cross services.
· The shelter at the Lake Chelan Senior Center (Chelan) is being placed on stand-by status as of 9:00PM on Tuesday, September 18th. This means that the shelter is closed and not being continually staffed during either the day or night, but the Red Cross is prepared to re-open the shelter quickly if the need arises. Area residents are welcome to call or stop by the chapter office if they are looking for information about the fires and available Red Cross services.
o Any community member needing respite from the smoke or whose homes are under evacuation notice are encouraged to contact the office at (509) 663-3907 if they need access to either shelter during the day or night.
· The Red Cross continues to provide mass care services in the form of water, food, and snacks to area residents. As of 5:00PM on Monday, September 17th, the Chapter has served 283 meals and 3,055 snacks.
Due to air quality issues, all residents are encouraged to limit exposure to outside air; a N-95 mask is strongly recommended for anyone going outside. N-95 masks are available for purchase at area stores or at no cost at McGlinn's Public House while supplies last. McGlinn's is located at 111 Orondo Avenue and is open from 11AM to 11PM Monday through Thursday, 11AM to Midnight on Friday, 8AM to Midnight on Saturday, and 8AM to 10PM on Sunday. Masks are not available at the Red Cross office and any donations of N-95 masks should be taken to McGlinn's Public House.
The community is encouraged to continue to support the work of the Red Cross by making a donation to Disaster Relief online at www.redcross.org, over the phone with a credit card by calling (509) 663-3907, or in person at the Chapter office (12 Orondo Ave., Wenatchee).
HOW PEOPLE CAN HELP Those who want to help can make a donation to support those affected by the fires in Washington as well as wildfires across the US this summer by making a donation to American Red Cross Disaster Relief by visiting www.redcross.org or calling 1-800-RED-CROSS.People can also text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Contributions may also be sent to local American Red Cross chapters at 12 Orondo Ave, Wenatchee WA 98801. The Red Cross is unable to accept small, individual donations of goods or collections of items such as clothing, food, toys, furniture, medical or cleaning supplies.
