Fort Complex / Goff Fire Information Update - Wednesday, September 12, 2012
Yreka, CA A Red Flag warning predicts 20 to 25 mph winds from the North and Northeast through Thursday of this week. The warmer and drier winds are coupled with a humidity range of 10 to 18 percent. The new Type 3 Incident Management Team assumes command of the Fort Complex today at 7:00AM, September 12, 2012. 100% containment was declared at 6:00PM, September 10, 2012.
Fire crews continue to work on mopup and fire suppression repair on the northwest corner of the fire inside the Red Buttes Wilderness. To maximize on site work time crews are camping overnight in the Wilderness and being resupplied by helicopter. Crews also continue to work on mopup and fire suppression repair on the southern perimeter of the fire along State Highway 96. Four crews of 20 firefighters each and a Strike Team of 5 engines are working on these tasks.
A Burned Area Emergency Repair (BAER) Team is being organized to begin work this coming Thursday on post-fire watershed assessments. The team will be making recommendations on any stabilization needs in the burned area such as erosion control, hazard tree removal near roads and trails, as well as the potential for spread of noxious weeds.
Various trail, road and area closures will stay in place for the safety of firefighters and forest visitors. Fire traffic as well as other hazards such as falling snags, stump holes and rolling rocks can be encountered in the fire area. Drivers are urged to use caution, especially on Highway 96 west of Seiad Valley, CA.
Closures & Fire Restrictions:
Thompson Creek (18NO1), Thompson Ridge Road (19NO1), Lily Pad Road (47N80) and Bug Creek Road (18N02) are closed on Klamath National Forest. Multiple trail closures are in effect including portions of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), Boundary National Recreation Trail, Fort Goff Trail and Portuguese Creek Trail.
