Kinney Fire Report

Custer, SD - Fire managers are working actively to contain the estimated 100 acre Kinney Fire, while providing for firefighter and public safety.

The fire was reported today, September 4, and is located about 7 miles northeast of Newcastle, Wyoming. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Current containment is at 5%.

The fire is located on federal and private land. Structures are located within a half mile of the fire.

A Type III Incident Management Team led by Incident Commander Jason Virtue, is implementing fire suppression tactics, while monitoring fire behavior, the terrain, and weather forecasts.

"All resources are aggressively working to catch this fire," said Lynn Kolund, Hell Canyon District Ranger.

Forest Service, State, and local Volunteer Fire Departments have responded to the incident. Two heavy air tankers have been dropping retardant on the fire, along with bucket drops from a Type 3 helicopter.

The public and the media can expect an update at 9:30am tomorrow morning.
