POWELL SBW FIRE COMPLEX

Sunday, September 16, 2012

Nez Perce - Clearwater National Forests

Loc

Contact: Molly Puchlerz Phone # (208)942-0303

Date Started: 7/20/2012 Total Personnel: 76

Cause: Multiple Lightning Strikes Size: 47,072 Acres

Percent Contained: 0% Injuries to Date: 2

Resources: 1 Type 1 Helicopter, 7 Engines, and 2 Water Tenders.

Location: The complex consists of three main and numerous small fires situated in an arc running southeast to southwest of the town of Powell, Idaho, straddling the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness boundary. The three main fires are named from east to west as: Fern, Cedar and Freeze Out/Queen.

Yesterday' Activities: Fire behavior had moderate activity yesterday, picking up just over 1000 acres with creeping surface fire and group torching. Ground operations continued patrols along the Beaver Ridge containment line and adjusted the fire protective wrap on the Beaver Ridge Lookout. Patrols were also continued along Lochsa River, north of the Freeze Out/Queen fire, to make sure no spots jumped Highway 12.

Today's Activities: A high atmospheric system will clear some of the smoke out river corridor today. Today's weather also calls for cooler temperatures at all elevations, therefore fire behavior should be similar or less than yesterday. With increased visibility helicopters may be utilized to cool down any active fire along the Highway 12 corridor. Ground forces will continue to patrol Beaver Ridge, the Elk Summit area and the Highway 12 corridor.

Remarks: Reminder to Forest Visitors, we are still under Stage 1 fire restrictions, this includes all private and agency lands protected by the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests.

Under the State 1 Fire Restrictions, the following acts are prohibited on the restricted state, federal and tribal managed lands, roads and trails:

· Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire, stove fire except within a designated recreation site, or on their own land, and only within an owner-provided structure.

· Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle, building or designated recreation site, or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable materials
