Buffalo, WY. (September 9, 2102)

The Gilead Fire is 40% contained. A direct fire containment line has been constructed around the eastern and southern flanks of the fire. The western flank of the fire is completely within the boundaries of the Bighorn National Forest. No homes or structures are threatened in that area.

The western flank of the fire from Firebox Park to approximately one mile west of the Martini Trail will remain in monitor status due to the impossibility of putting firefighters on the ground in such rugged terrain. "We do not place our firefighters in situations that could cause harm or death. If there are no escape routes, safety zones or medevac locations, we will not risk their safety. Firefighter safety remains paramount in suppressing this fire", Chuck Russell, Gilead Fire Incident Commander, said today.

Aerial suppression, including helicopter bucket drops, has assisted in keeping the fire in check within the steep and rocky terrain until a season ending event takes place.
