Current Resources: 658 personnel, including 10 crews; 40 engines; 5 dozers; 12 water tenders; and 9 helicopters.
Yesterday's Activities: Helicopters had another full day of flying, conducting bucket drops, slinging gear to crews, delivering a crew to west side of the fire, and gathering intelligence. Crews continued to mop up the recent burnout on the north side. A small pocket near Orogrande Summit burned actively, crews suppressed a couple spot fires, and structure-protection crews did more work at Mallard Ranch. The fire was most active on the east side and produced more smoke than in recent days. Resources actively worked on the fire that is established in the top of the Rhett Creek drainage.
Today's Activities: Greg Poncin's Rocky Mountain Type 1 Incident Management Team is shadowing the California team today in preparation for taking command tomorrow morning. Work on the fire will continue in much the same way as the past few days: crews will continue to improve, mop up, and hold fire line; fight the fire directly where they can; locate and suppress spot fires; and work with air resources to suppress the fire. Analysts expect weather and fire behavior to be slightly more active than yesterday with the possibility of some group torching and potential for short-duration crown runs if the wind picks up.
Evacuations: The Idaho County Sheriff's Department has reduced the Stage 3 evacuation request for Orogrande and Concord to a Stage 2 evacuation warning; Red River and Red River Hot Springs remain in a Stage 2 evacuation warning. Residents of Dixie, Comstock, Mallard Creek Ranch, and Cook Ranch remain under a Stage 3 evacuation. Elk City remains under a Stage 1 evacuation alert.
Road Closures: The Crooked River Road (Road 233), at the junction with Highway 14, remains closed to nonresidents, despite the evacuation change. Road 222 is closed to all access, including residents, from Trapper Creek Road south to the community of Dixie. In addition to the pilot-car escort for Dixie residents in the morning (in at 8:00 a.m., out at 9:00 a.m.), a second escort is now available to bring residents to Dixie at 5:00 p.m. and out of Dixie at 6:00 p.m. Please call the information number or read the full announcement on www.inciweb.org/incident/3219/ for more details. Forest Road 1190 from Trapper Creek to Dixie Summit is closed to all access, including residents. Forest Road 1190 from Trapper Creek and Forest Road 421 from Red Mail Box to the Whitewater area are closed to all nonresidents.
Area Closures and Fire Restrictions: The area closure around the fire has been extended south to include Comstock. From Whitewater it runs southwest along the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness boundary to Forest Trail 212, to Forest Trail 211, and ends at the Dixie Work Center on Forest Road 222. Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are in effect on the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests.
