McGuire Complex Daily Update 09.20.2012

Incident: The McGuire Fire complex was started by lightning event on 8/27.

Location: Two miles west of Dixie, two miles south of Orogrande, and four miles southwest of Red River, ID.

Agency Jurisdiction: USDA Forest Service, Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests

Cooperating Agencies: Idaho County Sheriff's Department

Incident Command Post: (ICP) is located at the old Red River Ranger Station.

Current Size: 38,612 acres Containment: 2% Structures Threatened: 683

Yesterday's Activities: The complex became active near Jack Mountain at 1:00 pm under the influence of gusty northwest winds. Large groups of trees torched and short duration crown fire runs with long range spotting were observed on the east flank. A moderate size column developed over the fire in association with this active fire behavior. The northeast and southwest flanks also exhibited active fire in the afternoon. The southwest area of the fire was active on the Silver Spur Ridge and spread further into the Gospel Hump Wilderness. A pilot car convoyed residents into Dixie via Road 222 at 8:00 a.m. and convoyed residents out of Dixie at 9:00 a.m.

Evacuations: Stage 3 Evacuation Requests remain for the residents of Concord, Orogrande, Dixie/Comstock, and Mallard Creek/Cook Ranch. A Stage 2 Evacuation Warning remains for Red River. A Stage 1 Protection Alert is in place for Elk City (a Stage 1 Alert advises residents that active fire is in the area).

Road Closures: The 222 Road is closed to all access, including residents from Trapper Creek Road to the community of Dixie. Conditions permitting, a pilot car will escort residents into Dixie at 8:00 a. m. and from Dixie at 9:00 a.m. to the Trapper Creek Road junction daily. Forest Service Road 1190 from Trapper Creek to Dixie Summit is closed to all access including residents. Forest Service Road 1190 from Trapper Creek and Road 421 from Red Mail Box to the Whitewater area is closed to all non-residents.

Area Closures: An Area Closure around the fire area is in effect for public safety and to ensure unimpeded access for firefighters and equipment. Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are in effect on the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests.

Today's Activities: The fireline in the Dixie area will continue to be reinforced. Patrols will monitor the less active portions of the complex. Crews will also continue to work on containment lines on the south and east sides of the fire and contain spot fires in those areas. Crews will continue to enhance structure protection measures in Mallard Ranch, Dixie, Comstock, Orogrande, and Red River and initiate structure protection in Whitewater. Fire personnel will be scouting for suppression opportunities ahead of the fire. High pressure will bring dry air over the fire area increasing fire activity. There will be a potential for fire spread on the northeast, southwest, and east sides of the fire perimeter.

Current Resources: 8 crews, 57 engines, 5 dozers, 14 water tenders, and 7 helicopters.

Total personnel: 635
