Containment on the Millie Fire Increases

Bozeman, MT... The Millie Fire, burning on the Gallatin National Forest twenty miles south of Bozeman, is 10,515 acres and remains 81 percent contained.

Approximately 30 acres burned on the Millie Fire yesterday, however firefighters were able to secure more of the perimeter and increase the containment as the fire continued to slowly back downslope toward the containment line in the east fork of the South Cottonwood drainage. There was also an increase in fire behavior on the interior as a result of a slight lowering of relative humidity.

A new 20 person hand crew arrived yesterday and was helicoptered into a spike camp to continue with suppression operations. A 10 person Fire Use Module arrived last night to replace the Module which timed out, and will begin work today. Firefighters also completed the back haul (removal) of unneeded fire equipment and supplies from the fire area. Rehabilitation of some of the burned area continues.

Today weather conditions will be slightly cooler with a slight increase in humidity. Smoke will continue to linger in the lower elevations. Weather forecasters have indicated that a change to windier, higher humidity conditions will occur beginning tonight. This will increase the likelihood of isolated thunderstorms between 2-10 PM on Monday.

As a reminder, for your safety:

Hyalite reservoir remains closed to all watercraft due to continued helicopter activity. Fishing and swimming is allowed along the shoreline.

The following CLOSURES also remain: Little Bear, South Cottonwood and Storm Castle drainages.
