Anderson School Presents Firefighters With $200 Donation

Incident: Millie Fire Wildfire
Released: 9/22/2012

Bozeman, MT- In an outpouring of generosity, the students and families of Anderson School, presented Millie firefighters with thank you cards and a donation of over $200.00 to the National Wildland Firefighters Foundation.

The project began after fourth grade student, Timea Laatsch, approached school officials about showing her gratitude for the work firefighters had done to protect the South Cottonwood community during the Millie Fire in the Gallatin National Forest, 20 miles west of Bozeman.

Anderson students chose to donate to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation, an organization set up to provide emotional and financial assistance to the families when a wildland firefighter is seriously injured or killed in the line of duty.

Six engines including crews from Gallatin National Forest, Mark Twain National Forest, Wayne National Forest, White River National Forest, Arizona Bureau of Indian Affairs, and RAE Sourdough Fire Department arrived at the school on Friday to help students understand what wildland and structural firefighters do during wildfires. Students had the opportunity to get an up-close view of fire engines and suppression tools, learned about the fire prevention and impacts of fire on the landscape, and got an update on the Millie Fire still burning nearby in Gallatin National Forest.

Students presented dozens of handmade thank you cards which have been distributed to firefighters working locally and in remote areas of the Millie fire.
