Bozeman, MT - Firefighters will take advantage of the mild weather again today as they work to increase containment on the Millie Fire. The fire is estimated at 10,205 acres and 31 percent contained.
The plan for today is to scout new areas to construct fireline on the north, south and eastern edges of the fire. Crews will also patrol and mop up hot spots as well as begin to repair areas on the western edge that were impacted by suppression activities.
The heavy helicopters will continue to do water drops as needed and the lighter ships will support crews by hauling equipment and supplies.
Some of the hazards crews face on this incident are steep slopes, fire-weakened trees and rolling logs and debris. At the morning briefing, Safety Officer, Scott Wuebber, told the crews, "Continue to work hard and get through the day safely."
There are 537 personnel assigned to the incident. Resources include four helicopters, 15 crews, 20 engines, eight dozers and four water tenders.
The forecast shows sunny skies and light winds. The temperature will be between 68-72 degrees. The outlook for this weekend is for warmer temperatures and stronger winds; this will likely contribute to increased fire activity.
To provide for firefighter and public safety, a forest closure remains in effect. Motorists are reminded to be aware of increased fire traffic along U.S. Highway 191 and to use caution around the fire area.
