Origin: T16N, R10W, Section 36 on the Helena National Forest-Lincoln Ranger District
Approximate Size: 2,400 acres
Fire Update: The East Fork Fire remains active, primarily on the south and east flanks of the perimeter. The fire continues to burn in contiguous sub-alpine fir and dense, dead timber with some isolated and group tree torching and spotting. Several spot fires, which altogether total about 20 acres, were detected in the Copper Creek drainage south of the Scapegoat Wilderness boundary. A squad of firefighters will directly attack and work to suppress the spots in the lower portion of the Copper Creek drainage today. The main fire has crossed into the head-end of the Arrastra Creek drainage, outside of the Wilderness boundary, in extremely steep terrain and dense stands of snags and dead timber. Another firefighter squad is responding to this area and will initiate indirect suppression tactics, since it would be unsafe to attempt direct attack at this time.
Two fire crews were ordered to help in suppressing the spot fires and fire spread outside of the Scapegoat Wilderness; however, due to the many large and complex fires in other areas, those orders may not be filled immediately. In the meantime, local firefighters will continue to respond, as is safe to do so.
Although there will be no direct attack on the main East Fork Fire and other spot fires within the Scapegoat Wilderness boundary due to safety concerns, fire personnel will continue to monitor the fire from safe locations.
A closure order was issued for the area near the East Fork Fire for public safety; below is a detailed description of that closure area. Also as a result of the fire activity, Brett Todd's outfitter camp in Meadow Creek was relocated to two separate, safe places: Middle Fork and Camp Creek.
Near critical fire weather conditions will persist over the fire area over the next several days with windy conditions and low relative humidity levels. Fire Danger remains "High" for the Lincoln District.
Closures: Below is a list of current closures due to the East Fork Fire activity:
· Arrastra/Porcupine Basin Trails #482 & #488: entire trail of both beginning in T15N R10W Section 25 & T15N R10W Section 23
· Dry Creek/Meadow Cr Trail #483: from the beginning in T15N R10W Section 17 to junction of Mainline Trail #481 in T16N R9W Section 8
· Bugle Meadow Cut-across Trail #480: entire trail beginning at Meadow Lake T16N R9W Sec. 18 and ending in T16N R10W Section 1
· Sourdough Trail #427: entire trail beginning in T16N R9W Section 8 at the junction of Mainline Trail #481
