Today's Update: Last night firefighters kept a close watch on the very steep, inaccessible fire edge in McCloud River and Hawkins Creek. In those two areas, the fire will back down to near the water's edge before the fire is fully contained. Firefighters will continue that effort today, so that no spots will carry fire outside their containment lines. There are also fuels well inside the perimeter that will be consumed. Fire activity has been decreasing each day. Crews will mop up any hot spots near containment lines.
Firefighters initiated this morning's briefing with a moment of silence to honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001.
Crews will continue working on suppression repair on the considerable miles of dozer lines, hand lines and roads needing work as a result of firefighting efforts. In total, there were 67.1 miles of dozer lines built during the last month, and each mile must be attended to with the use of heavy equipment like excavators, chippers and dozers. Four road graders will be also be used today repairing roads used by firefighters. There is very much work yet to be done.
Today at 5 PM, a transfer of command will take place. Management of the fire will be handed over by California Interagency Incident Management Team 1 (McGowan) to South Central Sierra Incident Management Team (Cooper).
Fire Behavior: Winds are expected to be light, out of the southwest at 5-8 mph. Humidity is forecast to be 12-16%.
A few more Bagley Fire Facts: Air Operations: Total flight hours to date = 651 hours. Over 1.5 million gallons of water and 348 thousand gallons of retardant were dropped on this fire to date. 62,475 pounds of cargo and 565 persons have been transported by air thus far.
Public Safety: Smoke from a new fire (the Ward Fire) may produce smoke that will impact communities near the Bagley Fire. Local air quality conditions and forecasts are available at http://airnow.gov/index.cfm action=airnow.main. For smoke conditions in McCloud, visit the Forest Service real time smoke monitor site at http://tinyurl.com/92xqbzn. Residents are encouraged to visit the "Protect Yourself from Smoke" website for smoke protection information at http://www.cdc.gov/Features/Wildfires/.
In the interest of firefighter and public safety, the Shasta-Trinity National Forest has issued emergency closure areas. These closures will remain in place until the area is safe for the public. Please see the Forest Orders and closure maps on InciWeb (address above).
