Cygnet Complex News Release

Yellowstone National Park Fire Update - Sept. 2, 2012 - 11:30 Am

Incident: Cygnet Complex Wildfire
Released: 9/2/2012

September 2, 2012 - 11:30 a.m.

Summary: More than a half inch of rain quieted three lightning caused fires in the central portion of Yellowstone National Park. None of the fires has grown since Thursday night. Although the fire danger may rebound, it has dropped to Very High. The rainfall has also prompted the park to remove fire restrictions.

Cygnet Fire: The 2,400 acre Cygnet Fire has burned on both sides of the Norris to Canyon road. A section of the backcountry along the road corridor remains closed. Smoke rose from the west side of the fire Saturday afternoon before the latest rainfall occurred. The fire may become more active if sunny skies, windy conditions, and little additional rainfall occur in the coming days. This lightning caused fire, located 5 miles southwest of Canyon Village, was discovered on August 10.

Dewdrop Fire: This lightning-caused fire is in the backcountry, 9 miles southeast of Canyon Village. It is estimated at 1,100 acres. Some backcountry closures remain in effect.

Range Fire: This 400 acre backcountry fire is located 8.5 miles southwest of Tower Fall. Like the Dewdrop Fire, this lightning caused fire was discovered in late July.

Other fires and smoke: Smoke drifting into the park from fires across the region may be visible at times.

Weather: Thunderstorms Friday and Saturday brought both rain and lightning to much of the park. That means with sunny, windy and dry conditions expected the next few days, new fires may be detected.

Fire Restrictions: Rain has lessened the fire danger, allowing the park to lift fire restrictions. However, visitors are encouraged to be careful with fire.

Impacts to visitors and area residents: All roads leading to the park and all park entrances, roads, campgrounds, lodging, stores and other visitor services are open. Backcountry closure details are available at any park Visitor Center or Backcountry Office. Backcountry information can also be obtained by calling 307-344-2160.

Additional Information: Fire information is available 24-hours a day by calling 307-344-2580, on the web at http://www.inciweb.org/unit/5382/, or on Twitter @YellowstoneNPS.
