Temporary Road Closures Expected for Seiad Creek Road
YREKA, CA -Motorists can expect closures and substantial delays (multiple hours) on Seiad Creek Road from approximately 4 miles north of Highway 96, where the county road ends to approximately 6.5 miles up Seiad Creek Road at the west fork of Seiad Creek to begin soon. A contract for Burned Area Emergency Rehabilitation (BAER) work from the Goff Fire of the Fort Complex on the Seiad Creek Road, Forest Road 48N20 is scheduled to be awarded soon.
Because the contract involves replacing culverts, the contractor will close the road while they take out the old culverts and put in new ones. Runoff and flooding predicted as a result of the burned area above Seiad Creek Road poses a moderate to high risk of a damaging event occurring over the next five years. Most of the existing culverts on the road are undersized for such an event. Installing new culverts and improving the road will also help prevent sediment from being delivered to Seiad Creek's mainstream, where endangered Coho salmon are present.
The contractor will open the road at the end of each work day when they leave the site. Motorists should be advised there will be several hours of delays on this section of Seiad Creek Road once work has begun. Work is expected to begin as early as next week, the following week or when weather permits.
